Aren't we covered under the school policy?

Some policies only cover the parent-teacher group for events during school hours and on the school campus. Other school districts are removing PTA groups from their school’s insurance policy.

Every school is different, therefore our best advice is to give your school a list of your activities and be very specific. Don’t ask if your carnival is covered. Instead, go into great detail and list specific activities such as moonwalks, dunking tank, face painting, pony rides, etc. Always get a written letter from the school stating that all of your activities are covered.

We are just a parent group; who would sue us?

Contrary to common belief, Parent Teacher groups are not immune from liability because of their non-profit status. You, as an individual member or officer of your Organization, could be held personally liable for an accident that occurs at one of your events. PTA Insurance not only protects your Organization but also protects you as an individual, especially when there is limited coverage through your homeowner’s insurance.
