PTO (parent-teacher organization) insurance is specialized coverage that protects school parent groups, their officers, volunteers, and funds from claims that arise during fundraisers, school events, and day-to-day operations. If you lead or participate in a PTO, PTA, or booster club, this page covers the insurance options available to your group.

General Liability Insurance (One Day Event Insurance) Starting at $50
Fidelity Bond (Theft and Embezzlement Insurance) Starting at $85 per year

Aren't we covered under the school policy?

Some policies only cover the parent-teacher group for events during school hours and on the school campus. Other school districts are removing PTO groups from their school’s insurance policy.

Every school is different, therefore our best advice is to give your school a list of your activities and be very specific. Don’t ask if your carnival is covered. Instead, go into great detail and list specific activities such as moonwalks, dunking tank, face painting, pony rides, etc. Always get a written letter from the school stating that all of your activities are covered.

We are just a parent group; who would sue us?

Contrary to common belief, Parent Teacher groups are not immune from liability because of their non-profit status. You, as an individual member or officer of your Organization, could be held personally liable for an accident that occurs at one of your events. PTO Insurance not only protects your Organization but also protects you as an individual, especially when there is limited coverage through your homeowner’s insurance.

Educators who participate in PTO activities should also explore liability protection for educators to safeguard their teaching careers from individual claims.

Does this coverage apply to PTAs and booster clubs, too?

Yes. AIM coverage applies to parent-teacher Organizations (PTOs), parent-teacher associations (PTAs), booster clubs, and educational foundations. PTAs and PTOs operate similarly as independent, volunteer-run school parent groups and carry the same liability exposures. Whether your group files as a PTO or PTA, you qualify for the same general liability, fidelity bond, directors and officers, and property coverage options. Booster clubs supporting sports teams or performing arts programs are also eligible.

What kind of insurance does my PTO group need?

Event Insurance

General Liability Insurance

General Liability coverage protects you from lawsuits if someone is injured at one of your organization’s activities and holds you responsible. Coverage extends to third-party bodily injury and property damage claims arising from negligence, and includes protection for your PTO’s volunteers. Policy limits start at $1,000,000 per occurrence and $2,000,000 in aggregate.

Covered events include: school carnivals, bake sales, silent auctions, school picnics, fundraiser runs, teacher appreciation events, spirit nights, and other fundraising activities organized by your group.

Embezzlement Insurance

Bond Coverage Insurance

It covers anyone who your organization trusts with the money (President, Treasurer, board member, volunteer or courier). If that person runs off with your money, AIM replaces those missing funds.

Directors and Officers Liability

If someone sued the officers of your organization for mismanagement, misrepresentations, dissemination of false or misleading information, or inappropriate actions, this coverage would pay to defend you. D&O liability covers up to $1,000,000 in defense costs and settlements, with no deductible.

Protect Your Property

Inland Marine (Business Personal Property) Insurance

Protect your raffle merchandise, auction items, and fundraising supplies while in your possession. This coverage also protects any personal property of your organization (popcorn machines, snow cone makers, etc).

What Could Go Wrong Without PTO Insurance?

Most PTO leaders never expect to need insurance until they do. Here are three real scenarios that show why coverage matters for every school parent group:

Scenario 1: Injury at a School Carnival

A child trips on equipment at your annual carnival and breaks their arm. The family files a bodily injury claim against your parent-teacher organization. Without general liability insurance, your PTO could be liable for medical bills and legal fees. With AIM coverage, the claim is handled, and your group is protected.

Scenario 2: Treasurer Embezzles Fundraiser Proceeds

Your PTO raises $8,000 at a silent auction. The treasurer disappears with the funds. Without a fidelity bond, that money is gone. AIM’s embezzlement insurance covers theft by any person your organization trusts with its funds, including board members, volunteers, and couriers.

Scenario 3: Officer Sued for a Decision Made in Good Faith

A parent sues your PTO board, taking issue with the choice to spend funds raised by the group on a new playground. Directors and officers liability coverage steps in to cover your legal defense, protecting officers from out-of-pocket costs arising from claims of misrepresentation or breach of duty.

These scenarios are not hypothetical. They happen to parent-teacher organizations across the country every year. AIM has protected more than 24,000 groups since 1989.
