Oh, the life of a working parent… it’s rewarding, but definitely not for the weak.
Aside from kicking butt at work, paying the bills and keeping your kids alive, your days also might look like soccer practice, ballet practice, work emails, ice cream dates, healthier dinners, and maybe even a parent group meeting… also known as PTO, PTA or Booster Club.
Why? Because you want the best for your kids. And that sometimes looks like getting involved in activities like PTO, PTA or Booster Clubs and taking on roles that are out of your expertise… like figuring out all things insurance to make sure your nonprofit is covered.
So, for you busy parents, here are the answers to the top six questions parents ask us about insurance:
1. Why does my organization need insurance?
Insurance not only protects your organization but also protects you as an individual. As an individual member or officer of your organization, you could be held personally liable for an accident that occurs at one of your events. This means that your personal assets could be at risk if you were sued because of one of these accidents. Are you willing to put your checking account, your savings account, possibly your 401k or other assets at risk for your Organization?
2. Aren’t we covered under the school’s policy?
More and more parent teacher groups are calling us stating that the school district is removing them from the school’s insurance policy. There are some schools out there, however, who might still cover the parent-teacher groups under their policy.
The best advice is to give your school a list of your activities and be very specific. Don’t just ask if your carnival is covered, go into great detail and list things like dunking tank, face painting, pony rides, etc., and get a written letter from the school stating that all of your activities are covered. Some policies only cover the parent teacher group for events during school hours and on school campus. Every school is different.
4. Aren’t parent teacher groups immune from liability?
This is a common misconception but parent teacher groups are NOT immune from liability. It is favorable to be incorporated, but there have been many situations where the “corporate shield” that being incorporated provides, has not helped in preventing a lawsuit.
