Myth: your Parent Teacher Organization and alcohol can’t mix
Yes, a PTO or Booster Club is made for the kids, but that doesn’t mean the grown-ups can’t have fun too! And nothing says “grown-up” like an adult beverage.
Alcoholic beverages can be a great way to relax and connect with other parents in a mature environment.
However, there are several things to consider before you start mixing your mimosas.
Consider Your Parent Teacher Organization Members
First, you have to ask; do the other PTO parents want alcohol at an event? It’s important to read the room on this. If the majority of your PTO or Booster Club parents don’t support this idea, it’s best to leave the wine in the cooler.
After the votes are in, there will be some technicalities to follow up on.
Your PTO or Booster Club Will Probably Need a Liquor Permit
Most cities and venues require you to get a temporary liquor permit or liquor license. Be sure to check your state laws and speak with local authorities. Not all states allow a Parent Teacher Organization to sell alcohol at their events. It may be possible to get a temporary permit for the occasion, but you’ll need to check with your town’s clerk office.
It might be easier to pick a venue that already has a license to serve and sell alcoholic beverages, such as a restaurant.
Protect Your PTO and Booster Club Members
For your event to be considered successful, you’ll want to be sure that all attending parties are as safe as possible.
A good way to make sure no one drinks too much is by utilizing drink tickets, to limit how many beverages attendees can receive. If anyone seems unfit to drive, be sure to call a cab, or other trusted car service, to take them home. It’s also a good idea to hire an off-duty officer to oversee the event. This can help your guests feel safer and may have others thinking twice about how much they consume. For more tips click here.
